Kuta Beach & South Coast of Lombok (The Gerupuk Beach) also offer good quality of surf. You may need to hire boat from locals to take you to some of the wave’s point. If you stay in Kuta Beach Lombok, ask around, many locals surfer will guide you to find the waves.
Kuta Lombok is “surfers’ paradise”. Waves are excellent and many good surf points, such as Mawi, Mawun and many more along South coast of Lombok.
This huge bay is about 7 km east Kuta. The bay itself is home to five different spots which work on various tide, wind and swell combinations. Basically you can always get a wave at Gerupuk. All waves can only be accessed by boat.
Inside Gerupuk: or Bumbang Bay, is a right-hander over a flat reef. It is suitable for all levels an has fun waves, with a long wall and a forgiving lip. On big days with a Southwest swell it can be a great spot to surf. This break is surfable at any seasons and can handle any wind, even the trade wind, as it is protected by the surrounding hills. Best on an incoming tide and can hold 10ft solid.
Outside Gerupuk: or Gili Golong. A right-hander that is good at mid to high tide, better take your booties at low. Multiple peaks outside offer big drops on takeoff bending into a hollow and fast inside section. Can hold 8-10ft but is best at 4-6ft, from October to April.
Don-Don: The furthest break inside the bay and as a result needs a bigger swell to break. Don Don is a perfect A-frame peak walling and bending both left and right. For all level of surfers. Can be good in any season as long as the winds are light. Works on any tide, with out going tide the best time.
Kid’s Point: or Pelawangan, is another right-hander, only breaks on the biggest days, but when it works, its barrel city. Best on an incoming tide.
A right hand reef break located on the west side of Kuta. Access by boat and land is possible. This break is one of the best right hander on the South Coast. Mid to low tides can see the inside section doubling up and barreling. A left hander on the other side of the bay is surfable, though only when its small. Need a north-west wind, most common from October to April. Are Guling can hold 8-10ft when perfect, but is best at 4-6ft.
Located 20 minutes west of Kuta. On small days this reef break offers a nice peak with short hollow rights and lefts. At 6ft plus, Mawi transforms into a heaving left barrel, with elevator drops and heavy hold downs. At 8-10ft it’s not a spot for the faint hearted. Best on mid tides and a south east trade wind, from May to September. Mawi can hold any size you’re prepared to surf, just bring your balls!
Located on the South West Coast of Lombok, 3 hours drive from Kuta. On its day Desert Point is regarded as one of the best waves on the planet. Barrels of 20 seconds have been filmed there and 10 second tubes are common. Full or new moon low tides, a south east wind and a big swell are needed, most consistent from May to October. It can go weeks without waves, but just one Desert Point bomb will make the wait worth it. Experienced surfer only. Bring your booties an a good tube riding board.
Things to do in Lombok
Lombok is completely different from Bali, has a much more arid and mountainous nature is a succession of hills with millstones and crops in the valleys. The beaches are the most beautiful I’ve seen so far in Indonesia, huge expanses endless white sand or black opposite side and even pink! coconut trees fronting the strong wind, a lot of cows and goats, monkeys running across the road and make you company.
The island of Lombok, Indonesia (in the archipelago of the Lesser Sunda Islands), is surrounded by several smaller islands, some of which enjoy an absolutely unique location and nature of their kind. This is, without a doubt, the case of the Gili Islands, whose Indonesian name is Tiga Gili (the Three Gili), although sometimes are Kepulauan Gili (Gili Islands calls); their names ‘individual’, in reality, are Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. All three islands are of substantially circular shape, and outline a ray line, even from the coast, from which they are accessed individually with connections by ferry or hydrofoil from Bangsal and Teluk Nare. The islands are surrounded by tropical beach, making them truly unique for lovers of the sea, offering an almost untouched nature, with the island of Gili Meno is the only one to also have a small lagoon inside
The second highest volcano of Indonesia (3726 m) is definitely one of THE highlights of Lombok! You can book multi-day, guided tours to the Crater Lake and even to the top at all touristy spots. The pictures speak for themselves…
TIU KELEP WATERFALLS
Located in the vicinity of the village of Senaru Bayan, in the north of the island of Lombok, the Tiu Kelep Falls are one of the most interesting and scenic inland points. Surrounded by tropical nature, with dense forests and open spaces almost suddenly, the Tiu Kelep Falls are two natural jumps that descend for a few meters, in a subtle but constant, thus giving an impression of spaciousness and fascinating movement. You get there by beating a path in nature, usually accompanied by local guides, offering cheap prices primarily to tourist groups; once there, you can swim under the waterfall, even if one of them is just recommended for the depth of the lower basin
PEARLS AND TEXTILES
n Lombok, as throughout Indonesia you can buy quality products at affordable prices craftsmen rather content. But we must be careful, because some imitations are made in series and have unauqlità decidedly poor originals. Especially in Lombok are products of high quality fabrics, made with handloom or with particular dell’Ikat technique.
The best-known center for quati products is Sukarara, in the southern part of the island. Lombok is also known for its ceramics and for stuffed baskets, as well as for laproduzione pearl. the latter have particular colors that characterize the Lombok products: ungiallo gold, and a dark gray, black qusi. It must be said that iprodotti best are shipped abroad, but in the main pearl shops these are come conil certificate of authenticity, size and the characteristics of the purchased pearls.
TANJUNG AAN BEACH
The beach of Tanjung Aan is, according to many, the most beautiful beach of Lombok (Lesser Sunda Islands, in the south of Indonesia), especially for the great natural spectacle offered. If you look to the classic tropical beaches, in fact, Tanjung Aan fully meets the characteristics that are generally imagine: beaches with fine sand, soft and clear, crystal clear waters and little waves, which make the water a bit ‘hot, but also highly enjoyable d ‘summer, a lot of nature that surrounds it in full. There are no facilities or services, but the beach is frequented by vendors, so sometimes insistent, offering a broad product category, including various souvenirs; interesting and very economical is the nearby car park, where you can leave your own vehicle spending, the change, only a few cents of euro
The dry season, particularly between June and October, is the best for trekking and to reach the most remote areas. The rainy season, from October to May, is a bit ‘hotter and much more humid, but pleasant for traveling; in some respects it is more pleasant of the dry, dusty conditions, and the landscape is greener and charming.
The Merpati companies, GT Air and Wings Air connects Lombok to Bali. There are numerous daily flights from Mataram to Denpasar (Bali), in Sumbawa Besar and Bima (Nusa Tenggara) and Surabaya (Java). Frequent ferries connect Lembar (Lombok) to Padangbai (Bali). The crossing takes at least four hours. Ferries to Sumbawa start at Labuhan Lombok and arrive at Poto Sano. The journey takes less than two hours.
Lombok has an extensive road network, but buses and public bemo generally only travel on main roads. Bemo, or minibus, run through all the island’s roads; alternatively you can hire one. Apart from these, you can rent a cidomo (chariot drawn by ponies), find a ride on a motorcycle or easily walk. In the north-east and in the south there are usually public transport between the larger towns, but are infrequent and become very rare when it gets dark. You can wander around the island and reach the most distant localities if you have your own transport. The motorcycle is the cheapest and most versatile option, but a rental car (high enough off the ground) will allow you to get very far. The mountain bike is the ideal medium because you can load on boats to move from one coast to another, or to visit the islands. The outrigger boats, prahu calls, using short distances to reach the points suitable for snorkeling or surfing, while the slightly larger boats (jukung) allow you to move from one island to the other.
